About Monica

Monica Chernoff is a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (#133736) and supervised by Macy Grim, LPCC (5921). She has a Master of Science in Marriage & Family Therapy from the University of Southern California. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Occidental College.

Currently, Monica is working at Macy Grim Therapy, located in Hermosa Beach. Monica has experience working with children, teens, & student-athletes dealing with academic/ performance stress, anxiety, body image, behavioral outbursts, aggression, and divorce in the school and private practice setting. Her style in therapy includes mainly using Humanistic techniques, play therapy with young children, hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Family Systems approaches. This makes her one of the best teen therapists in the South Bay, as well as one of the best athlete teen therapists in the South Bay. Monica is also an advocate & speaker for athlete mental health in the South Bay Community by doing public speaking at colleges, local schools, parenting groups,  podcast appearances, and team workshops.

Last year, Monica worked with South Bay Children's Health Center and provided therapy services for over eighteen children weekly at different elementary schools struggling with ADHD, school refusal, anxiety, and adjustment. Monica also worked with USC Neighborhood Academic Initiative where she provided psychotherapy for scholarship students experiencing trauma, grief, depression, and academic stress. Monica was a student-athlete herself in college and played on the National Philippine Water Polo Team. Monica’s wide range of experiences led her to want to work with children, adolescents, and their families who experience stress and mental health challenges in sports and school.

Monica is also trained in Ericksonian Hypnotherapy by Dr. Norma Barretta, MA, PhD who is a clinical psychologist and well-known hypnotherapist who has over 70 years of experience in psychology. Dr. Barretta studied personally with Milton Erickson who was a pioneer in psychology. Monica is able to provide hypnotherapy to her clients for any presenting problem such as sleep disorders, panic, stress, grief, and much more. Before graduate school, Monica worked in schools and community mental health agencies such as the Boys & Girls Club - Metro LA, Community Helpline, and the Philippine Development Foundation in Tondo, Manila.
